Abstract for "Profiles of Passionarity: Lev Gumilev and Far-Right Extremism in the Digital Space."

In this paper, I examine the reception of the works of Soviet historian and ethnographer Lev Nikolayevich Gumilev amongst the far-right in the digital space. I engage this discussion beyond the theoretical/conceptual level and examine the tangible presence of Gumilev’s works and ideas in the politics of the contemporary far-right to understand how and why he is beginning to grow in popularity among this political subculture—as do I explore the implications of this development, injecting my own analysis as to what this might mean for the future of the far-right. Although this may seem like a meaningless monitoring exercise, it is important to understand ideological developments within extremist groups like those that I will consider in my research—especially in the wake of the political turmoil instigated by the far-right in recent years.
